Principal's Message

Lena Huffmon

As Principal of Garfield Elementary, it is an honor to work with a dedicated staff, over 230 students who are eager to learn, and a supportive community. Our mission is to invest in the hearts and minds of all students in order to cultivate social, emotional, and academic learning. We focus on developing the whole child through Positive Behavior Intervention and Supports (PBIS) and Multi-tiered Systems of Support (MTSS) by emphasizing school-wide expectations, positive reinforcement, and data-based academic and behavior interventions. Our students and staff “Roar the Four” by being respectful, responsible, ready, and safe. Our staff is committed to working as a team to recognize students for outstanding choices and growth in both academics and behavior.

We believe that all students are capable of learning and need to be challenged to meet or exceed learning goals. Therefore, teachers utilize the state-adopted common core standards and data analysis to guide instruction while maintaining rigorous expectations and emphasizing critical thinking skills. We challenge every student to develop a love for reading, as it is the gateway to success across all content areas and throughout adulthood.

At Garfield, we value parental and community involvement and welcome participation in Parent Club, Title 1 meetings, English Learner Advisory Committee, School Site Council, parent workshops, volunteering in classrooms, school-wide events, and more. To develop a strong school community, we believe in providing opportunities for parents to play an active role in the lives of our students and have a direct impact on policy decisions.

Welcome to Garfield Elementary, a place where every student, parent, and community member is valued by our devoted staff. I am looking forward to a great year of learning and growth, and I appreciate the continued support from our Garfield families.
